What is a Good Ice Maker Refrigerator?

Best Ice Maker RefrigeratorsA good ice maker refrigerator is the one that fits between your counter space so you can move around your kitchen freely. It has a stainless steel finish, as this type of finish seems to be most durable. Also, it comes with numerous shelves and internal drawers so you can store your food and drinks in there. And, most importantly, has a built-in ice maker and at least some ice storage.

Who Needs an Ice Maker Refrigerator?

Let’s break down some of the reasons why would someone need an ice maker refrigerator. If you keep nodding as I list the reasons, then keep going till the end of this guide.

1.  People With Small Kitchens

Well, that’s me! I don’t have a spacious kitchen but I know how to get the most of what life gives me. You know what they say – when life gives you lemons, make a lemonade. When life gives you a small kitchen, go find a proper ice maker refrigerator.

2. Party People

Hm, seem like I can relate, again! Can you? Well, then you need some ice to make ice drinks and cocktails when your friends come over. An ice maker refrigerator could be your assistant with this task if you don’t have much space to fit an ice maker into your kitchen. Store all of your ingredients in there so everything is cool and ready for serving and make ice with it to add that perfect final touch to the whole story.

3. People Ready to Invest In A Refrigerator With Ice Maker

Many of you are aware the best home appliances come at hefty prices. If you have some extra money to spend, a good ice maker refrigerator could be one of the best investments you will ever make, literally.

How Does a Refrigerator Ice Maker Work?

It’s not hard to tell a refrigerator ice maker consists of a refrigerator, ice maker machine, some storage space, and water supply. Yet, how does this whole system work and make ice? Each refrigerator comes with a set of coiled heat-exchanging pipes. With refrigerator ice makers, a metal ice tray is connected to these pipes. A compressor is in charge of guiding refrigerant through the condensator and releases it into the evaporator.

As it flows through the condenser coils, the refrigerant gets cooler and cooler and finally turns into liquor. This liquor then travels through the expansion valve, and what else would this valve do but expand it? Meanwhile, the air concentrates around the refrigerant and cools down the metal tray and pipes.

Now, a water pump, which is one of the crucial components for the ice maker, drives water to the ice tray and fills it. As the tray is already cool, the water gradually gets cooler as well so that ice is formed.

Yet, this is not the end. Once the ice is formed, the ice maker switches the path of the refrigerant by forcing the refrigerant towards a bypass tube. When hot gas heats up the ice tray, this makes the cubes go loose.  Slanted cavities then make the cubes slip out down in a bin when your ice is ready to use.

Best Ice Maker Refrigerator Reviews

When I was looking for a top-notch ice maker refrigerator to buy, I did massive research on the available models. Not only I looked up online but talked to friends, cousins, and salespeople. Let’s be honest here. You won’t be buying a new refrigerator every 5 years, right? You need a reliable, high-quality appliance that can stay with you for at least 10 to 15 years. Well, that’s how I sorted out products these 5 out of numerous ice maker refrigerators I saw.

FRIGIDAIRE FFSS2615TPThe FFSS2615TP by FRIGIDAIRE is a side-by-side 36-inch fridge with an ice maker that features great build quality and several higher-end features. Although this model is not overly spectacular at first glance, it is fairly reliable and durable, which is what I appreciate most.

It comes with a built-in automatic ice maker but you can set it to on/off optionally. Also, it gives you 2 types of ice to choose from – cubes or crushed ice. If it wasn’t for this feature, the FFSS2615TP would be nothing but a basic fridge. However, when knowing you can have ice cubes for smoothies and juices and crushed ice for food serving, you can really nail any dish or drink you want to make.

When it comes to capacity, this model boasts 25.5 cubic feet (cu.) feet capacity. In other words, this is how much food you can store inside, and 25.5 cu. ft. is far above average capacity. Out of these 25.5 cu. ft., 9.1 cu.ft goes in the freezer.

You might like the bright and modern LED lighting that makes the interior of this appliance quite sleek. Me personally, I care more about crisper drawers that make it more convenient to store different kinds of foodies while the aesthetical part comes as a cherry to the top. Overall, the FRIGIDAIRE FFSS2615TP makes a hella good fridge+freezer+ice maker combo so I put it to the forefront of my list.

Key Features

  • Massive 25.5 cu.ft capacity,
  • External ice maker and water dispenser,
  • Humidity-controlled crisp drawers.

What I Like

  • Adjustable glass shelves,
  • Filter change alert,
  • Silver/black finish.

What I Dislike

  • A bit noisy.

2. Kenmore 51783

Kenmore 51783Here comes another side-by-side refrigerator by Kenmore. Their countertop-depth 51783 could be a great choice if you want to use space in your kitchen in the best way possible. It boasts 20.6 cu. ft. capacity so you can store a week-long food supply in it.

Instead of sacrificing the entire ice bin, Kenmore designed this “SpaceSaver” ice maker that makes it easy to make and pick up ice without even opening the door. The ice maker is actually right there, built in the door.

This freeze+fridge+ice maker model comes with some thoughtful features such as adjustable shelves, a humidity-controlled drawer, and a charcoal air filter. The thing about this filter is that it prevents odors that might spoil the taste and smell of your foodies.

If you ask me, the Kenmore 51783 is one of the sleekest models on this list. It has a kind of futuristic look so it would be a great fit for any modern kitchen.

Key Features

  • SpaceSver ice maker,
  • CleanFlow Air Filter minimizes odors,
  • SmartSense temperature management system.

What I Like

  • Adjustable glass shelves,
  • Intuitive interface,
  • Snack drawer, dairy shelf.

What I Dislike

  • Available in steel finish only.

FRIGIDAIRE FFSS2315TSIf you like most of I said about the FRIGIDAIRE FFSS2615TP but 36 inches seems too high and you don’t need 25.5 cu. ft. capacity, the FFSS2315TS could be a better pick. This one is 33 inches high, and these 3 inches might mean a lot to you if you are a bit tight on the space in your kitchen.

On the other hand, the FFSS2315TS features 22.1 cu. ft. capacity, which is significantly lower than with its counterpart, the FFSS2615TP. If you don’t have the need to store a bunch of food in your fridge, then you don’t need a lot of extra capacity. However, 22.1 cu. ft. is still more than enough to store more than enough food for the whole week.

When it comes to other features, this ice maker refrigerator is pretty similar to the first one – it comes with an automatic ice maker, adjustable shelves, and LED lighting interior.

Key Features

  • Great 22.1 cu. ft capacity,
  • External ice maker and water dispenser,
  • Crisper drawers.

What I Like

  • Multi-level LED lighting,
  • Deli drawers,
  • Ready-select controls.

What I Dislike

  • One of the buyers claimed the fridge stopped cooling after a year or so.

4. Daewoo RTE21GSSMD

Daewoo RTE21GSSMDLooking for a budget-friendly ice maker refrigerator? The Daewoo RTE21GSSMD comes at a slightly lower price than the other products on my list, yet – it still comes with similar features. For instance, you get 21 cu. ft. capacity, which is fairly enough for this price. If you need more space, simply adjust the shelves and you will fit the best fit to store all of your foods and drinks in there.

Unlike other ice maker refrigerators here, the RTE21GSSMD comes with a built-in ice maker. That means you would have to open the door every time you need some ice but hey – it’s not much of a hassle when you take its price into account.

Going back to its highlights, the RTE21GSSMD maintains optimal temperature and prevents your ingredients from going bad.  It comes with humidity-controlled crisper drawers, which is a usual feature but still worth mentioning.

The outer appearance of the RTE21GSSMD is plain but the magic happens when you open the door. Inviting LED bulbs to add a new dimension to this model. However, what I appreciate most about lights is that I can easily find my fav foodies in the middle of the night in case I get hungry. Do you feel the same?

Key Features

  • 2 humidity control crisper drawers,
  • 15 cu. ft. fresh food capacity and 6 cu. ft. freezer capacity,
  • Multi air-flow cooling.

What I Like

  • Crystal clear door bins,
  • Utility case,
  • Luxurious lights.

What I Dislike

  • The ice maker is placed on the inside so you would have to open the door more frequently.

GE GSS25GSHSSIf I talk about looks, the GE GSS25GSHSS is similar to the Kenmore 51783. This model is very modern, elegant, and easy-peasy to use. It comes with an intuitive display on the door so you can set your ice making and temperature preferences that way. You can choose between ice cubes and crushed ice while the dispenser can provide chilled water as well.

Other than that, the GSS25GSHSS boasts almost the same features as the other products on the list. It comes with adjustable door bins so you can store gallon-sized bottles and larger items easier. Glass shelves seem to be a standard when we talk about high-end models and GSS25GSHSS is no exception.

Again, if you care about your kitchen aesthetics and have no doubts about investing a serious amount into a quality and durable ice maker refrigerator, the GE GSS25GSHSS could meet your standards.

Key Features

  • 4 cu. ft. capacity,
  • Adjustable spill-proof shelves,
  • Super-easy to clean.

What I Like

  • High-end appearance,
  • Can accommodate multiple larger items,
  • Practically noiseless.

What I Dislike

  • This is the most expensive product on the list although it has none of the special features that make it stand out from the competition.

Ice Maker Refrigerator Buying Guide

Ice Maker Refrigerator Buying GuideWhen looking for an ice maker refrigerator, you should consider several important features. After all, it would be best to think about these features twice, considering the amount of money you are going to invest in this appliance. These are some of the factors I think that matter the most when you are shopping for this type of product.

1. Refrigerator With Ice Maker Styles

There are several refrigerator styles you should know about. I am going to discuss each type in the following sections but let me just explain why you should matter about the type. Different types feature different sizes, capacities, and ice makers as well. However, let’s just let it sit until I list all of the models down below.

2. Dimensions

It is more than clear you should find a refrigerator that matches the layout of your kitchen. Ideally, you should be able to fit it between your counter space. That’s where your fridge will sit naturally and you will be able to reach it easily. Cabinet-depth and built-in refrigerators make the best choice for narrow spaces but also come at higher prices.

3. Type Of Finish

My kitchen is purely aesthetic. There’s nothing wrong with paying attention to details. I simply like all of my appliances to match when it comes to color. You can choose between 2 types of finishes – classic steel or elegant black.

Steel is classic, neutral, and easy to maintain. However, it is prone to scratching if you are not careful enough. I mean, it’s quite unlikely you would go with a knife over the surface of your refrigerator, but I just want to draw attention to potential advantages and disadvantages of this type of finish. Also, stainless steel shows fingerprints more than other types of finishes.

When it comes to black finishes, this type of ice maker refrigerator can give another dimension to your kitchen. I had an all-black refrigerator and it made my kitchen look so elegant and sleek. It also looked at least twice as expensive as the price I paid for it. Finding a customizable finish in the category of ice maker refrigerators is pretty hard, not to say almost impossible.

4. Shelving and Drawers

Here, you should take into account your or your family’s needs and eating habits. Which type of ingredients do you store in your fridge the most? Do you usually buy bottles of water, juice, or wine and store them in the fridge? If you do, then you should be careful about the shelving. If the shelves are not adjustable, you will have a hard time fitting those bottles in.

On the other hand, some foodies simply don’t mix. Putting fish and fresh strawberries in the same drawer wouldn’t be a good idea. If you enjoy various types of ingredients, you should arrange them by categories. Meat, deli, fish, fruits, vegetables – you should have enough drawers to accommodate them all. Some models even feature temperature settings for individual drawers so you can keep different ingredients at the ideal temp. However, note that these features come at a higher price.

5. Extra Features

On top of these regular features, some more innovative ice maker refrigerators come with extra features that add to the overall convenience of use. For instance, some models come with built-in touchscreens, deli drawers, or auto-defrosting options.

6. Ice Maker Capacity

Ice Maker CapacityThe main reason you are here with me today is that you don’t want a plain fridge. You want a fridge with an ice maker. And, because you need an ice maker, you should pay attention to its capacity.

Let me be honest with you – it would be absurd to expect this type of ice maker to produce tons of ice in the blink of an eye. No, you can’t get that. However, you can get a unit with a decent capacity so you can serve several cocktails at once. If you have a high demand for ice, then, my dear, check out my guide on the best commercial ice makers.

Most ice maker refrigerators make ice automatically and continuously so you don’t have to waste your time on this. Yet, I’ve seen models that require your command to do so. These models come at slightly lower prices.

7. Noise Level

Well, most fridges produce low to bearable noise. However, some models, especially when we talk about ice maker refrigerators may make some noise. If you ever had a separate ice maker, then you already know what I am talking about here. I’ve seen several appliances in this category that came with noisy cooling-system, fans, compressors, and ice-makers. Although this doesn’t have to be the case with every ice maker refrigerator, I guess you would have to get used to some level of noise.

8. Ease Of Cleaning

Does cleaning your fridge takes ages? You should remove melted and frozen ice from it, clean the bin, maybe even scrub it with bleach to remove bacteria and clean all drawers and shelves. It all depends on the type of the refrigerator, because not all models are equally easy to clean, which I will explain in a bit. Either way, cleaning your ice maker fridge shouldn’t take too long.

9. Price

Typically, ice maker refrigerators come at high prices. I mean, it’s no wonder, as you get 2 appliances in 1, an ice maker and a refrigerator. However, I believe this type of investment can pay off numerous times over the years. I already talked about who might need an ice maker refrigerator so you can get a better idea about whether you should spend some money on a unit like this.

10. Warranty

Last but not least factor to consider when buying a refrigerator ice maker is – warranty. When investing such a high amount of money into something, you’d better get it covered for the next 5 years at least, although 10 would be just right. Be careful about which parts are covered by the warranty so you can have your peace of mind, just in case anything goes wrong.

Types Of Ice Maker Refrigerators

Types Of Ice Maker RefrigeratorsThere’s no one-size-fits-all ice maker refrigerator. You should become familiar with different types of this appliance before making the final buying decision. I explained them all and highlighted their most important features.

1. Top-Mount/Reverse

This is the most common type of ice maker refrigerator, mostly for it is the least expensive. As you can suggest, the freezer part is placed on top. That means you might have difficulties reaching the freezer section. However, bending could be a problem as well for people dealing with mobility issues. Other than that, the top-mount models can store a lot of ingredients, including larger ones and gallon-sized bottles.

2. Bottom-Mount

The story goes in reverse here. The refrigerator part is on top and the freezer is at the base. With this type, you can see all of the items in your fridge without standing on your tiptoe. There is a wide range of bottom-mount, both left and right-hand opening models, on the market. Most units come with handy storage compartments and bottle restrainers.

3. Side-by-Side

One of the most convenient types of ice maker refrigerators is the side-by-side refrigerator. It makes it easy to reach both the fridge and freezer without bending too much or tiptoeing. All of the shelves are accessible while standing and you can pack tons of food in there. Some models come with extra features such as adjustable shelves, ice water dispensers, and ice makers. It’s great when you don’t have to open the refrigerator door numerous times but have chilled water and ice at your fingertips.

4. French Door

French door refrigerators come with 3 or 4 doors, depending on the model. The fridge is located at the top and the freezer is located at the base. This type is similar to side-by-side refrigerators but you can choose whether you want your fridge to have 1 or 2 doors, which applies to the freezer section as well. It all depends on how much space you have in your kitchen and how much capacity you need to store your weekly supplies.

5. Bar Fidges

When you are really, really tight on the space, a bar fridge would do. However, a bar fridge is a basic fridge or fridge+freezer type of unit and doesn’t give you much storage capacity. If you live in a dorm, this could be it. Other than that, stay away from this type of refrigerator.

FAQ About Ice Maker Refrigerators

1- How Do I Reset My Refrigerator Ice Maker?

Remove the ice tray, and start looking for the reset button. It should be placed on the bottom of the ice maker. Most of the time, it is red. Hold the button for 10 seconds. In most of the cases, the ice maker will start ejecting the ice reserve right away. Once all of the ice is out, take the tray back and start the ice maker again.

If there is no restet button, you will find the on/off switch. Turn off the ice maker and leave it like that for 5 minutes, then turn it back on. Learn more about ice maker troubleshooting here.

2- How to Fix Refrigerator Ice Maker?

Try resetting it first. Follow the steps I explained in the previous section. If that doesn’t work, plug off the machine and find the shut-off valve. Mine is located behind the fridge, although it can be found underneath the sink as well. Turn off the valve and pour warm water over the water line to defrost it. Plug back the unit and run your ice maker. Everything should be fine by now. If not, then there’s no other way to fix it but to contact a professional.

3-How to Clean Refrigerator Ice Maker?

I followed these sanitizing tips, and it worked every time:

  • Unplug the appliance,
  • Remove the ice bin,
  • Fill it with detergent and warm water,
  • Optionally, you can put it in a dishwasher,
  • Rinse well,
  • Take the bin back and plug the unit back in.

Your life can truly become way easier once you find the best ice maker refrigerator. Not only you will have enough storage for all of your ingredients and drinks but you won’t need to buy a separate ice maker and waste space in your kitchen.

The FRIGIDAIRE FFSS2615TP could be the best pick from this list. It boasts the best capacity, sleek design, and it is fairly durable. However, if you don’t want to spend as much money on a unit like this, the Daewoo RTE21GSSMD might be the best alternative.
